AMHERST – The Amherst girls basketball program has found their next leader.

JD Carson, the former Kearney High School girls basketball head coach and longtime assistant coach, was named the head coach for the Amherst girls basketball team. Carson is set to replace former coach Brandon Rohr, after Rohr announced he was stepping down from the position in early-March.

Rohr finished his four-year tenure going 64-34, including a district runner-up finish this past season going 16-8.

Carson confirmed in an interview with KGFW and Central Nebraska Today that he has accepted the position with Amherst, naming Chase Dippel as an assistant coach to join him.

Carson was the head coach for the Kearney High Bearcat girls basketball program for one season in 2022-23, finishing the year 15-11 as district runner-up and a fourth place finish in the Heartland Athletic Conference tournament. Previously, he had been an assistant coach since 2012, while also leading the Kearney Boys and Girls golf teams. While coaching the golf squads, Carson aided with nine state qualifying teams and six individual medalists.

The Kearney High School alum resigned from his position in November of 2023 prior to the start of the season. Kearney ended the past season 12-11.

Carson and Dippel are also co-directors of a new basketball program in Central Nebraska, known as Platte River Prep.
